Two words of advice to...

Two words of advice to the preacher preparing a sermon on a special day. The first, spoken by Charles G. Gillroy to a class in homiletics: "Preach a sermon in keeping with the theme of the day." The second, a side comment by Emil Bremner, in a discussion of the Trinity: "we should not be afraid to invoke the word 'mystery.' " That is especially good advice on Trinity Sunday, but as Bremner went on to warn, we wander into the realm of monstrosity. Proverbs 8:31 might well be used for a sermon in keeping with the day.
