There are many themes in this Gospel: the blessedness of Mary, the pregnancy of Mary, the relationship with Elizabeth, the psalm of magnification, and the heritage of the people of God who have received mercy over the years. But the lowliness of Mary is the theme which holds the passage together.
Lowliness doesn't mean "crunching down" and pretending to be less than we are. It means stretching out to our full potential before that which is so great that we know how little we are by comparison. Those of low degree (1:52) are those who see themselves before God.
