Rabbi Kushner writes in his book, When Bad Things Happen to Good People, about his feelings and theology as he lives with a son who will die before reaching adulthood. When he was told that his son would die, the Rabbi reacted with disbelief. He was a good person. He worshiped; he gave his money to charity; he was honest; he had lived a very ethical life. If there was a God who was just, loving, caring, and fair, how could such a thing happen to him? For the Rabbi, God served the purpose of protecting and prospering the good people of the earth.
