In the city of Baku...

In the city of Baku, Azerbaijan, there is an ancient palace, built of solid stone, which is now a museum. As one walks from room to room, the place seems understated, for there is none of the oriental flair for decor and color to be seen now. Even -- or especially -- the throne room seems a bit of a letdown, for the throne is uncomfortable looking, being of wood inlaid with mother-of-pearl in patterns that are neither ornate nor particularly elegant. There is one feature of the room that is striking, however -- a grate in the floor near the throne.
