A euphemism according to the dictionary is the "substitution of an agreeable expression for something that may be unpleasant."
One of the best explanations of this word that I know was given by former Senator Everett Dirkson from Illinois. He called a euphemism "something that seems what it ain't." He went on to tell a story to illustrate the foolishness of euphemisms.
He said, "I am reminded of the man who filled in an application for an insurance policy. One of the questions he had to answer was 'How old was your father when he died and of what did he die?'
