Highway engineers who plan the roads that wind through mountains have to take many factors into consideration. They try to plan the road so that it follows the highest point of the valley and crosses the lowest pass in the mountain, but still travels the shortest possible distance. Plotting such a route requires a great deal of preparation. Many times low points have to be built up, rivers and streams have to be bridged, and tunnels have to be blasted through the tops of the mountains. But all this preparation makes for a faster, easier trip.
