If we want to understand what another person is talking about, we need to be familiar with some common words and ideas. If we want to talk about football with someone, then we need to know such terms as zone defense, flea flicker, and free safety. Otherwise, without knowing the rules and terminology, the game does not make any sense. Or if we want to talk about automobiles with someone, we need to know what a carburetor, a differential, and a PCV valve are. When we understand what the parts of the car are and what they do, all those pieces under the hood make sense.
