Here is a good place to observe that the "Maundy" in the title of this day is from the Middle English maunde, which was the ceremony of washing the feet of the poor on this day. In Old French, it is mande, and from Latin, mandatum (new), referring of course to Jesus' words in John 13:34 to the apostles after washing their feet. The word "mandate" is from the same root. Jesus' command in verse 34 was not a suggestion.
