In hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor, scientists have discovered life in the form of microbes thriving on toxic substances at 750 degrees Fahrenheit. In Antarctica, in freezing water two miles beneath the ice of Lake Vostok, microorganisms survive, cut off from light and outside nutrients. At Lidy Hot Springs, Idaho, 600 feet underground, extremo-philes (lovers of extreme environment) live on hydrogen at 137 degrees. At 1,200 feet below the ocean floor, other microbes eat volcanic rock.
