The author of Luke was careful to establish the exact dating of the events he records.
Here, the beginning of John the Baptist's ministry is clearly denoted. In ancient times,
events often were dated with reference to the rulers in power. The Roman Emperor, Judea
Governor, Galilean puppet king, high priests, and even the kings of surrounding countries
are all named. But these seemingly powerful individuals were minor characters on the
stage. What's really important is what God is going to do in and through Jesus.
