The old proverb, which was popularized in 1605 in Don Quixote, states, "The proof of the pudding is in the eating." The proverb may go as far back as 1300. It means, you can tell the food is cooked by trying it, or figuratively, don't assume something is in order until you test it. Unfortunately, because the proverb has become somewhat foggy in many people's mind, it comes out in an unintelligible short form, "The proof is in the pudding."
