Lamentations 1:1-6
Jeremiah lost Zion to Babylon and weeps bitterly over her. Ann Weems lost her son to a car accident and weeps bitterly over him. One is in mourning in the sixth century before Jesus (BCE); the other is in mourning in the 21st century after Jesus (CE). The times have changed, the characters have changed, but the feeling is the same. Both Jeremiah and Ann are tear-stained. Both understand that, in Ann's words, "Rachel will be comforted only when God wipes the tears from her eyes."
